BLUE RIDGE INTIMACY COACH Coaching for Couples & Men | BlogDo You Know Your Intimacy Style?Understanding Dr. Viviana Coles’ 4 Intimacy StylesBy Derrick Sims | Certified Sex & Relationship Coach | Blue Ridge Intimacy Coach

There is a question I ask almost every couple I work with in the early stages of coaching. It is simple but powerful, and the answer almost always reveals the heart of whatever disconnect they have been experiencing.

The question is this: Do you know how your partner experiences intimacy — not just what they enjoy, but what makes them feel truly connected?

Most couples cannot answer that question with confidence. And that gap — between how we give and how our partner receives — is often the source of more frustration, distance, and unspoken resentment than almost anything else in a relationship.

This is exactly why the work of Dr. Viviana Coles resonates so deeply with me. In her book The 4 Intimacy Styles: The Key to Lasting Physical Intimacy, Dr. Coles — a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sex Therapist — identifies four distinct intimacy styles that shape how people connect, seek closeness, and experience fulfillment in their relationships.

Understanding these styles is not just interesting — it is transformational.

The 4 Intimacy Styles

According to Dr. Coles, every person has a primary intimacy style — a dominant way they seek and experience connection. The four styles are Bonding, Release, Giving, and Responsive. Here is a brief breakdown of each:

💜  BondingFor the Bonding type, intimacy is most meaningful when it creates deep emotional closeness and trust. Physical intimacy is an extension of emotional connection — they need to feel safe, seen, and emotionally present with their partner before physical intimacy feels truly fulfilling. For this person, the experience of connecting matters as much as the physical act itself.
⚡  ReleaseThe Release type experiences intimacy as a powerful outlet — a way to decompress, let go of stress, and reset emotionally and physically. For this person, physical intimacy provides freedom and relief. It is less about romantic connection and more about the liberating experience of letting go. This is one of the most common styles in men, and understanding it can help partners stop misreading the need for Release as a lack of emotional investment.
🎁  GivingThe Giving type finds their deepest fulfillment in pleasing their partner. Their sense of connection and satisfaction comes through acts of generosity and attentiveness. For the Giver, their partner’s pleasure IS their pleasure. When their partner is satisfied and fulfilled, they feel the most intimately connected. This style is common in both men and women, though it is often misunderstood as selflessness when it is actually a deeply personal need.
📡  ResponsiveThe Responsive type does not initiate from internal desire — instead, desire emerges in response to cues, atmosphere, and their partner’s energy. This person needs the right conditions — emotional safety, a comfortable environment, and often initiation from their partner — before desire naturally surfaces. This is not a lack of interest. It is simply how their intimacy works. Understanding this style can eliminate enormous amounts of confusion and hurt feelings in a relationship.

Why This Matters for Your Relationship

Here is where most couples run into trouble. We tend to give love and intimacy the way WE want to receive it — not the way our partner actually needs it.

A Release-style partner initiates intimacy after a long, stressful day — not because they are being selfish, but because that is how they naturally seek connection. Meanwhile, their Bonding-style partner feels approached rather than courted and pulls away. Neither person is wrong. But without understanding each other’s styles, both feel unseen.

The goal is not to become your partner’s style — it is to understand it well enough to meet them there.

A Giving-style partner pours all of their energy into their partner’s pleasure but secretly longs to feel pursued themselves. A Responsive-style partner gets labeled as disinterested when in reality they simply need a different kind of invitation.

These mismatches are not character flaws or signs of incompatibility. They are gaps in understanding — and gaps in understanding can be closed.

A Healthy Intimate Life Balances All Four

Dr. Coles is clear on this point: a healthy intimate lifestyle does not mean locking into one style forever. The goal is a well-rounded approach to intimacy that draws on all four styles — sometimes bonding deeply, sometimes releasing freely, sometimes giving generously, and sometimes responding organically to the moment.

Knowing your dominant style gives you a starting point. Learning your partner’s style gives you a roadmap. And working together to round out your intimacy — to move fluidly between styles depending on the season of your relationship — is what creates the kind of lasting, fulfilling physical and emotional intimacy that most couples are searching for.

How Coaching Helps

One of the most powerful conversations I have with couples and men in coaching is exactly this one — helping them identify their intimacy style, understand their partner’s style, and learn how to speak each other’s language with confidence and compassion.

This is not complicated work. But it is intentional work. And when couples do it together, the results are remarkable — less conflict, more connection, and an intimate life that actually reflects what both partners want and need.

If you have been feeling disconnected, misunderstood, or frustrated in your relationship — this might be the conversation you have needed to have for a long time.

Knowing your intimacy style is the beginning. Acting on that knowledge is where everything changes.
